What to Wear for Your Family Beach Photoshoot - Jetty Park - Cape Canaveral, Florida

Updated: Oct 11

Featuring this gorgeous family session as the perfect example, we explore how to choose outfits for your next beach photography session. Choosing what to wear for your beach session doesn’t have to be stressful. This beautiful family nailed it, and here’s why:

Smiling family of five, a mom and dad and 3 young boys standing on a sandy beach with grass and a cloudy sky background. They wear blue and green outfits, embracing each other.

What Worked Well

1. Coordinated, Not Matching

Each family member wears a different outfit, but the colors complement each other perfectly. They chose muted tones like sage green, dusty blue, and soft cream, which work beautifully together with the natural beach backdrop.

2. Neutral and Earthy Tones

These colors photograph well and create a timeless look. Bold or neon colors can reflect poorly on skin tones. They tend to distract from your faces and the stunning scenery. That’s why the family’s color palette is ideal. When choosing a color palette it's important to also keep in mind the theme and colors of the interior of your home. You're going to want to get these gorgeous portraits printed to hang on your walls, so make sure whatever you choose to wear will blend nicely with the design of your home.

3. Textures and Subtle Patterns

The boys' shirts feature gentle patterns and textures that add interest without overwhelming the image. It's best to avoid logos, graphics, or busy prints that can take attention away from the family's connection.

4. Barefoot on the Beach

Being barefoot keeps the vibe natural and relaxed. This element is perfect for the beach setting. Shoes often feel out of place in sandy photos. Plus, it's one less thing you have to coordinate!

5. Flowy Fabrics

Mom’s dress adds beautiful movement and elegance to the photos. Dresses or skirts that catch the breeze can elevate the look and feel of your portraits.

What to Avoid

Here are some tips to steer clear of:

  • Bright neons, large logos, or high-contrast prints. These distractions can detract from the overall image.

  • Exact matching outfits (especially all white!). While coordinating is encouraged, avoid perfectly matching to highlight individual personalities.

  • Uncomfortable or overly formal clothing. Stay away from tight suits, stiff dresses, and anything that restricts movement. Your clothing should reflect a relaxed beach vibe.

  • Distracting accessories. Bulky sport watches, baseball caps, and sunglasses can take the focus away from the family.

  • Shoes. If you're on the sand, it's best to ditch them!

  • Sunburn. I cannot stress this enough. The Florida sun is no joke! If you are on vacation and enjoying some beach days prior to your session, please, please remember to reapply that sunscreen! It would be a good idea to match your dress top to your bathing suit top to avoid possible tan lines. For example, if you are wearing a strapless dress, it would be best to wear a strapless bathing suit so there are no accidental tan lines (or burns!). Also, don't forget the sunglasses! Raccoon eyes are a real thing and there is only so much editing I can do to fix this, which can potentially delay your galleries. For the kids, same rules apply! I do love those sun-kissed pink cheeks but I will mute some of the redness if it is too distracting for your photos.

Capturing the Moment

When planning your outfits, think soft, simple, and cohesive. Let your family's love and personalities take center stage—just like this sweet crew!

Additional Tips for a Successful Session

  1. Plan Ahead: Coordinate outfits days or even weeks in advance. This allows time for any last-minute alterations or additions.

  2. Consider the Weather: Check the forecast to ensure you’re prepared for changes. Layers can add depth to your outfits and provide comfort.

  3. Keep It Fun: Engage your children and spouse in the outfit selection process. When everyone feels included, it makes the experience more enjoyable.

  4. Confidence: If there is some sort of insecurity you have, try your best to find an outfit that compliments that part of you nicely. For example, if your arms are one of your not-so-favorite features, wear a long sleeve or 3/4 sleeve top or dress. I use different posing angles to always try and compliment my moms and make them feel their best.

  5. Engage with Your Photographer: Feel free to send me photos or screenshots prior to your session, I can provide valuable insights and suggestions. I'm happy to help!

Take this opportunity to get all dolled up! Do your hair, your makeup, whatever will make YOU feel your best! Confidence is KEY when getting your pictures taken. Combining all these aspects can lead to stunning results. The right outfits contribute to beautiful photographs.

In conclusion, let your family’s joy shine in every picture. Remember to choose outfits that represent your style and personality. As you prepare for your session, focus on what brings you together. The love in your family should always be the main star.
